The Joys of Spring

When the snow finally melts in the northern hemisphere and the grass starts to become visible it really never gets old. Puddles start to form and the snow banks recede as the water from the snow start their descent down the mountains and hills into the rivers, lakes and ocean. Water, the elixir of life, starts its wake-up call for all living things and begins to awaken everything out of their slumber.
Among the first flowers to break into the spring air are the crocus; with their violet, purples and yellows they dance into the crisp air defying the still cold ground around them. As people pass by, even the folks not into gardening cannot help but notice the tiny dancing blooms, especially after a long, cold and snowy winter.
The days start to get longer and the heat starts to get stronger when the delightful cardinals and robins appear and start their breeding cycle again. The cardinal, with its red plumage and unmistakeable crown are akin to a tropical bird, as their scarlet colors and superb songs dance in the early morning hours just after dawn; nothing quite grabs ones attention as they do a close fly by reminding humanity of the beauty all around us.

The Canada Geese are a familiar sight as well during these times as they head north to their breeding grounds. The familiar “v” once again brings the birds into our consciousness ensuring better weather is ahead for all; and their beautiful wonders and pretty honks are sweet music to the northern resident unable to fly south like they can!
The trees get into the spring routine as well as they start to run with sap attracting the mourning cloak butterfly. In fact some people see this deep purple beauty and cannot believe a butterfly could appear so early in spring with no flowers around, but this exquisiteness has the ability to drink the sap from the trees for its sweet nectar; and therefore can sustain itself long enough until other food sources become available. |
