Scintillating Summer Phlox

Picture
Summer phlox offers beautiful bouquets
Summer Phlox is one perennial where it has the ability to stand tall and show it all. This seasonal beauty can be counted on for mid to late summer non-stop blooms and it can do it as the backbone of a garden because of its striking beauty and height.

The summer phlox comes in many different varieties satisfying the most finicky gardener with a diversity of colours such as; white, pink, purple, magenta, red, violet, light blue and so on. There is also a variation in the height of summer Phlox paniculata as it ranges from two to four feet in height; this enables the gardener to place this versatile plant where it will have the most impact during the summer gardening season.

When arranging the initial palette of the garden, there are other flowers which bloom at generally the same time as the Summer Phlox that should also be under consideration. The Purple Coneflower starts its show slightly before the yellow coneflower, but both compliment the summer phlox when but together. The Rebecca Daisy also displays vivid colours all summer long and is a good companion to keep near the Summer Phlox.

This award winning flower loves to grow in full sun to part shade. It does not like acidic soil, therefore keep it away from conifers. However the summer phlox like slightly alkaline, rich soil and loves to be well watered thus this will yield the best results.

One item that causes this plant issues from time to time is mildew. To avoid this do not place the summer phlox directly in the sun in dry soil with its stem exposed. Although it prefers sun to shade, it appears vulnerable in this situation. One strategy to alleviate this is to plant smaller plants around the base of it, such as Sweet William. In addition, ensure the plant has good air flow, in other words give it its space.

The summer phlox attracts bees, hummingbirds and butterflies to the yard.  All three are supreme pollinators and are thus important; therefore planting some near vegetable gardens would also be a good idea to ensure you get a good yield. In addition, butterflies and hummingbirds are wonderful to watch as they both have a calming and almost meditative effect on a person, not to mention they are beautiful! This flower is not as fragrant as many other perennials, however it does have a lovely light scent about it.
Transplanting summer phlox is very easy, as it is quite hardy; however try to ensure it’s not in the middle of the summer or on a hot day because it places undue stress on the plant. It’s always a good idea planning for a transplant when the weather forecast calls for slightly cooler and wetter conditions. The summer phlox can be transplanted by either uprooting the entire plant and dividing it, or taking small pieces off from the base with a sharp garden tool. Either way, every year it spreads so this likely needs to be done to keep the original plant form being over-crowded.
Including the summer phlox in any garden is a delight; it will provide non-stop showy blooms for years to come!  So what are you waiting for set that garden up today!
